Edouard "Newsy" Lalonde

Edouard "Newsy" Lalonde

Edouard 'Newsy" Lalonde is perhaps one of the most famous former members of the Renfrew Millionaires.  Although only with the team for a short time, his name alone drew crowds and media attention.

Nicknamed "Newsy" from his early youth spent working in a Cornwall newsprint factory, he began his professional hockey career with the Cornwall Rovers before moving to Toronto for two seasons.  In 1910 he joined the Montreal Canadiens, which was part of the National Hockey Association, and a team also owned by M.J. and Ambrose O'Brien.

After watching Lalonde score two goals in his first game as a centre for the Canadiens, Ambrose O'Brien decided the Renfrew Millionaires could benefit from this young star's talent.  He sent Lalonde to join the Renfrew Millionaires for the remainder of the season, where he scored 38 goals bringing his total for the year to 40.  In 1911, Lalonde returned to the Canadiens.

He would go on play in Vancouver, attracted to former Millionaires Lester and Frank Patrick's newly created west coast league.  Other Millionaires, Fred "Cyclone" Taylor, Donald Smith and Bert Lindsay, also went to play in the Patrick's west coast league.

A year later Lalonde would return to the Canadiens, where he would remain for the majority of his career.  He would live to see his name inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1950, and passed away in 1970 at the age of 83.
