Like many of the other Renfrew Millionaire players, forward
Ogilvie Cleghorn was enticed to join the team by a salary
offer. Signed for the 1910-11 season for a $1,000
salary, "Odie" joined the team at the same time as his
brother, Sprague.
Considered to be a solid and tough
player, he scored 20 goals in the 16 game schedule that
season, placing him in the top five on the scoring list.
Unfortunately, it was the last season for the Renfrew
Millionaires, the financial strain of the high salaries
finally catching up with team owner M.J. O'Brien and his son
Ambrose. The Millionaires ended the season with a third
place finish.
When the franchise withdrew from the National Hockey
Association, Creghorn joined the Montreal Wanderers, one of the original
teams that established the NHA.
He would go on to
win the Stanley Cup as a player for Canadiens in 1924, and
retired as a Pittsburgh Pirate. Ogilvie Cleghorn's career highlights
included being the top scorer in the National Hockey League in 1919
when playing for the Canadiens, and he left
hockey having scored more than 200 career goals.
However, his love
for the game didn't stop after he stopped playing professional hockey
as he rejoined the league with a new career as a referee, a
job he kept until the 1930's. |
